Which Type Mattress Gives Best Back Pain Relief?

If you’ve ever awakened with a nagging back ache and wondered if your mattress was causing it, I’ve got good news for you.  A mattress with good support is your key to the best back pain relief.

Have you ever noticed, when you sleep on a hotel mattress or stay at the home of a friend or relative, you sometimes wake up with a back ache?

The reason for “sleep induced” back pain is simply that you aren’t getting the support you need. 

There’s a test you can do, with any mattress, to check the amount of support it’s giving you in the small of your back.

Lie down on the bed, on your back.  Just lie there for a couple of minutes and get relaxed.

Without raising any portion of your body, simply reach down and try to slide your hand between the mattress and the small of your back.

The easier you can slide your hand beneath your back, the less support the mattress is giving you.

This test applies to new mattresses as well as old ones, so you can use this test when shopping in a mattress store.

There used to be an old wives tale about the firmer the mattress, the better support for your back.

That theory has been debunked recently by the medical community. 

Long before that, I had been advising people to lie on the floor and notice how there is a tunnel between the small of your back and the floor.

That means that the floor isn’t supporting the small of your back at all and soon you’ll develop low back pain.

You might be saying to yourself, “then maybe I should get a fluffy pillow top that I can just sink down into.”

I’m sorry to say that the fluffy pillow top mattress isn’t the answer either. 

A mattress that’s too soft will tend to “hammock” in the area of your lower back.  The hammock effect occurs when your back is curved outward instead of the natural inward curve at the base of your spine.   Picture yourself, lying on your back in a hammock, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.  Your back sags toward the ground, doesn’t it?

You need support in your lower back without the rigid feeling of lying on the floor.  Your mattress is supposed to be soft enough to allow you the comfort you need for a good night’s sleep.  What people are seeking in a firm mattress is, actually, just better support.
