			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://i.ytimg.com/vi/WdubsNQ7xMA/2.jpg" align="left"/>Eliptical trainers are great for people with bad knees who want to walk and possibly get an aerobic workout.  And the Gazelle Freestyle is considered by some to be the &#8220;poor man&#8217;s eliptical trainer.&#8221;  But this gem of a $175 machine has become a very important part of my lower back pain solution.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not really an eliptical trainer, and if it were, it woudn&#8217;t do much for my low back.  Most eliptical trainers have a fixed or variable &#8220;stride&#8221; that might be as long as 20 inches or slightly more.  The Gazelle Freestyle lets you have whatever stride your legs are capable of.  So if you take long strides, it gives you a tremendous thigh stretch along with a great aerobic workout.  But if you just walk with this machine, you won&#8217;t get much out of it.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a really fun machine to use, and I need fun in order to sustain this daily workout.  If you&#8217;ve ever done a &#8220;runner&#8217;s stretch,&#8221; you&#8217;re stretching the same thigh muscles that this machine stretches in a long stride workout.  You can&#8217;t get this workout by running.  You can&#8217;t maintain the kind of sprint that this strid requires for long without getting totally exhausted.  But I can do a 20-minute aerobic workout on the Gazelle Freestyle at full stride.  I don&#8217;t do that every day though.  I generally do 10 minutes at full stride, and in addition to the aerobic workout, I get a stretch like nothing I&#8217;ve ever had with any other machine or exercise.</p>
<p>My <a href="http://www.lowerbackpain-exercises.com/7daybackpaincure/google" style="color:#0099FF;text-decoration:underline;font-style:italic;" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='http://www.lowerbackpain-exercises.com/7daybackpaincure/google';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">back pain</a> over the 8 year period that I lived with it, often traveled down my sciatic nerves into one leg or the other.   The Gazelle Freestyle in full stride gives my upper thigh muscles &amp; tendons a good workout and stretch, and keeps everything in good working order.  I don&#8217;t have a hint of <a href="http://www.lowerbackpain-exercises.com/7daybackpaincure/google" style="color:#0099FF;text-decoration:underline;font-style:italic;" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='http://www.lowerbackpain-exercises.com/7daybackpaincure/google';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">sciatic pain</a> any more, and I think this machine is one of the main reasons.</p>

I started on the floor, but quickly graduated to a $30 bench.  If you have space I highly recommend it.  In this video, I demonstrate my method of doing bench crunches.  </p>
<p>I have tried to make my back/abdominal exercise routine fun, interesting and sustainable.  I fully intend to do this for the rest of my life.  In 6 months, this stretching &amp; exercise routine ended 8 years of <a href="http://www.lowerbackpain-exercises.com/7daybackpaincure/google" style="color:#0099FF;text-decoration:underline;font-style:italic;" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='http://www.lowerbackpain-exercises.com/7daybackpaincure/google';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">back pain</a>.  This bench, along with the inexpensive exercise machines I purchased have made this highly effective routine very fun, interesting and sustainable.  When I first started, I did everything on the floor, and I dreaded starting each morning.  Now I really enjoy it.</p>

<p>This exercise is fantastic for activating some of the more functionally important hip/pelvis stabilizer muscles.</p>
<p>Start by lying on your side with your hips and knees bent. Keeping your ankles together, slowly move your knees apart (top knee moves away from the bottom knee) and then return to the starting position.</p>
<p>During this movement, make sure that your top hip stays facing the ceiling and doesn&#8217;t roll either forward or backward.</p>
<p>You can use your hand to make sure the muscle is contracting. To do so, place your thumb on the bony part on the front of your pelvis (ASIS) and reach back around with the tips of your fingers. You should feel for the movement underneath.</p>
<p>Key Points:</p>
<p>-start on your side with your hips and knees slightly bent<br />
-keep your ankles together and spread your knees apart<br />
-make sure your hip stays upright<br />
-don&#8217;t let your hips roll forward or backward<br />
-use your hands to feel the glutes contract</p>
